The Luma Hotel in San Francisco is a new and innovative hotel that aims to demonstrate the inarguable value of colorful, premium lighting. The hotel’s immersive and colorful lighting design reflects the history and culture of the Mission Bay neighborhood where the hotel is situated. The hotel’s exterior is inspired by the salt ponds that used to occupy the area, and features back-lit, laser-cut panels that display an array of changing colors at night, making the hospitality installation immediately recognizable as a notable building. The hotel also features a beam of light that stretches up the corner of Third and Channel Street, creating a landmark for the city’s Illumination program.

The hotel’s interior lighting is equally impressive, showcasing art installations from notable San Francisco artists. The lobby features a dynamic installation by Jim Campbell, who used 4,000 LED bulbs to create a waterfall of light where shadowed figures climb up and down. The hotel’s rooftop bar, Cavaña, offers stunning views of the city and the bay, as well as craft cocktails and shareable plates. The bar’s lighting design is influenced by the natural elements of water, fire, and earth, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
